Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the ending
of slavery. First observed on June 19, 1865, it was on
this date that Union soldiers arrived in Galveston,
Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and that
slavery had been abolished.

Obama Proclaims June
Caribbean-American Heritage Month
In a proclamation
issued by the White House on Tuesday, June 2, 2009,
President Obama proclaimed June 2009 as National
Caribbean-American Month. Noting the continuing
contributions made by Caribbean- Americans to this
country's culture and history, the President urged all
to commemorate June by "learning more about
the history and culture of Caribbean-Americans."
